One of the difficult things that most people face when they have to face a new dietary change is to adjust to the new foods they have to eat. With the Paleo diet you will have to relearn many different things that you’ve been doing every day for most of your adult life. You’ll have to learn how to shop all over again; most of the items that you automatically reach for when you go shopping will be off limits and you’ll need to know how to pass those things by and reach for other items that may be new and unique. One of the ways to do this is by relearning how to cook. Learning how to cook is almost a necessary skill for those on the Paleo diet for a number of reasons. Notice how Brooklyn Paleo describes this need,
Eating a paleo diet without knowing how to cook is damned near impossible (unless you eat salads for every meal…. and even then, how do you cook the protein?) So you need to learn the basics at a minimum. Commit to learning how to cook at least 1 breakfast meal, 2 lunch meals, and 3 dinner meals that you really like.
Choose your starter meals carefully because that may be all you’ll eat in the beginning and you want to make sure that you really like them. Once you’ve mastered those you can expand and pick up more skills as you go along.
Cook in Bulk
While it may be fun in the beginning to cook a meal here and there, it can really help you to stay on track when you cook in bulk. Especially if you have a very busy lifestyle, you’ll appreciate the fact that you can set aside one afternoon or evening to cook for the entire week. You can portion out your meals and freeze them for when you’re ready to eat. Learn to make use of all of the kitchen gadgets that you’ve been saving up with. Turn your slow cooker on when you go to bed and you have a nice tasty meal when you wake up in the morning.
Step Away From the Salt
You also want to watch the amount of salt you put in your food. Most of us grew up using salt to flavor our foods and have since learned that this opens up a whole new set of health problems. Too much salt is not only bad for you but it is often used in some foods as a preservative. You’d be surprised how many packaged and processed foods contain salt.
Of course you don’t want food to be flavorless but learn to experiment with other tastes you can add to your foods. Play around with some herbs and spices to perk up your taste buds. Don’t just stick to the same old same old but go online and try some new international recipes to wake up the flavor of your food. Once your mouth gets used to savoring the many flavors of spices and herbs that you can try, you’ll hardly miss the salt.
Learning how to cook Paleo will make the transition to this new style of living much easier. Once you know how to prepare it, you can be assured that you know the ingredients of everything you’re cooking and reduce the chances of an accidental slip. Notice how this is explained in Shape Magazine,
Because Paleo is based off of whole, fresh foods, it’s easier to whip up meals at home rather than a restaurant where it’s harder to control what ingredients are used. Take this opportunity to experiment with new foods – maybe even challenge yourself to buy the weirdest-looking vegetable at the farmer’s market and ask the seller for advice on how best to prepare it.
Invest in some Paleo cookbooks and learn to be daring in the kitchen and your diet will not only be the best things for your health but it will be fun too.
